The interiors side of this guide: designing for mid-century proportions, for the seam between an old house and a new addition, and for the volume of a replacement build.
Three kinds of house sit on the same Barclay Downs streets, and each one fails differently when it is furnished generically. The original ranches have eight-foot ceilings and horizontal window bands; they reward restraint and low-profile furniture and punish over-scaling. The hybrids — original front, taller new rear — live or die at the transition, which has to be handled deliberately in floor, threshold and palette so the house reads as one building. The replacement builds have the opposite problem: volume without texture, which has to be reintroduced on purpose through plaster, real millwork, aged metals and layered light.
The other thing that separates a finished interior from a decorated one is when the designer arrives. On any project involving construction, the decisions that determine how a room feels are made months before delivery — ceiling heights, window placement, millwork depth, lighting layout, switch locations. Joining after drywall means inheriting constraints that cannot be undone, and paying for change orders that a framing-stage conversation would have avoided.
Emerald & Oak works throughout Barclay Downs and SouthPark on full-house interiors, renovation packages and new-construction selections, coordinating with the builder from framing so that lighting, millwork and finishes are settled while they are still drawings.
