Phillips Place
Open-air, walkable, and better for a leisurely afternoon than the mall. Boutiques, a cinema, restaurants and a hotel on Fairview Road.
Morrocroft Village

Why the retail here is unusual
Very few residential neighborhoods in the Carolinas sit inside a five-minute drive of both the region's flagship luxury retail district and a set of ordinary grocery-anchored centers. Barclay Downs does, because SouthPark grew up around it: the mall opened on land at the neighborhood's northern edge and the district assembled outward from there over sixty years. The result is that a resident can handle a Tuesday errand run and a special-occasion purchase from the same three intersections.
The everyday rotation
Morrocroft Village on Colony Road handles grocery, pharmacy, wine and dry cleaning for most of the neighborhood. Sharon Corners and Cameron Valley cover the same needs from the southern edge, and Park Road Shopping Center — Charlotte's oldest, about ten minutes south-west — adds an independent bookstore, a long-established grocery and a seasonal farmers market that the SouthPark centers do not attempt.
Getting in and out
Fairview Road and Sharon Road congest on Saturday afternoons and through the holiday season. Residents almost universally approach the district from the interior neighborhood streets rather than the arterials, which is one of the quiet practical advantages of living inside the grid rather than across a main road from it.
Furnishing a home here
Furniture, tile, lighting and appliance showrooms cluster along the Park Road and South Boulevard corridors and in the design district south of uptown, generally ten to twenty minutes away.
