The Neighborhood
Built on a dairy farm. Grown into the center of things.
Barclay Downs was laid out in the late 1950s on land that had been the Barclay dairy farm, at a moment when this part of Mecklenburg County was still countryside. Its developers gave the streets English names — Nottingham, Runnymede, Roxborough, Beverwyck — planted willow oaks along every curb, and platted generous, level lots.
Then, in 1970, SouthPark Mall opened on the far side of Sharon Road. What had been a quiet suburban subdivision became the residential heart of Charlotte's second downtown. Sixty years later the oaks are enormous, the mall is the Southeast's major shopping district, and the neighborhood still feels like a neighborhood.
